A copying pencil looks and writes just as a regular graphite pencil does. The difference between them lies in the fact that the graphite of the copying pencil contains an aniline dye. This dye reacts in contact with water; one would moisten a piece of tissue paper and press it against the original, and the tissue paper would then receive a mirror image of what was written with the copy pencil. This could then be read correctly by reading the other side of the translucent paper.
